Law #7: Have a Mentor

Everything before this has been about getting rid of problems that hold people back from learning. This is the first one about speeding it up. That might seem weird to people but it’s important. About 80% of the problem people have with learning is just actions they take that hold them back. Here is were we start to propel you forward faster. Welcome to the first learning booster.

Why do I call this a learning booster? Because this right here will cut down on the stuff you feel you need to know. A good mentor cuts the fluff out of your learning and focuses you on what matters. I talk more about this in my courses but briefly… this is the magic of takeaway studying. You will love the results.

Second and perhaps most important a mentor can correct anything you are misunderstanding. I can’t tell you how often people think they understand something but are wrong. Very confident but wrong. A good mentor finds this out very fast and snips it in the butt.

As an example, I was watching a video from a man explaining poverty and it’s correlation between 3 life choices. He mistakenly thought that the graph said that 20% of people choose the 3 things this article says you should do to avoid poverty. What the graph actually said was 20% of people who make these 3 life choices live in poverty. It then broke it down and over 50% of people who make these choices are extremely wealthy. To be clear this is a simple math error.

I’m sure this man was very smart but a good mentor would have instantly pick up what was wrong about this. They can correct you very quickly on any mistake you are having. Despite how much I like books, no book can do that. You need a living person in front of you for that.

The next biggest reason you want a mentor is because mentors bring accountability to your learning. Think about it. In school how many times did you get called out for being behind the planned learning schedule? If you were ever behind this should have been constant. Every time you turned around you should have been reminded.

If you compare that to when you get out of school you will quickly see the difference. No one will ever call you out. You have no accountability. Know try hiring a personal trainer. They will call you out every time you miss a lesson. They will call you out every time your form slips. They will call you out every time you do anything wrong. And do you know what? That makes a huge difference in your health. It makes a bigger difference in your learning.
